SOMERVILLE – Tufts University dominated second half play to take a 2-0 New England Small College Athletic Conference women's soccer victory over Colby College at Kraft Field Saturday afternoon. The win was the first for the Jumbos in the 2013 season and raised their record to 1-2, 1-1 NESCAC. Colby dropped to 0-2, 0-2 NESCAC.
Tufts tallied the only goal of the opening half, scoring in the 28th minute as Anya Kaufmann (Evergreen, CO) took a cross from the left side off the foot of Carla Kruyff (Boca Raton, FL). Kaufmann drilled the ball to the lower left side of the net as Colby goalkeeper Emily Brook (Duxbury, MA) stumbled attempting to move to the ball.
The first half was tightly played as Kaufmann's tally was the only real scoring opportunity for either team. Tufts outshot Colby 5-3 in the period, but the Mules held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Jumbos dominated the second period maintaining control of the ball for the vast majority of the stanza. In the 57th minute Robin Estus (Houston, TX) found Alex Farris (Arlington, MA) streaking down the middle. Farris drove the ball to the lower right side of the net for a 2-0 Jumbo lead.
Despite holding the better of play, the Jumbos had only one other strong scoring opportunity in the final 45 minutes with a shot by Kaufmann just going wide midway through the period.
Tufts outshot the Mules 16-6 in the contest and 10-3 in the second half. Kaufmann led the way with eight shots for Tufts with four on goal. Farris added three shots for the Jumbos.
Rachel Chazin-Gray (Berkley, CA) with one save and Eileen McGarry (Bolton, MA) with three stops split the shutout for the Jumbos. Brook made eight saves in the Mules' net with six coming in the second half.
Tufts will host Wheaton College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in a non-conference contest. Colby will also play out of league next when the Mules travel to the University of New England on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
