CAMBRIDGE - The Tufts volleyball team came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Endicott College in five sets on Saturday, highlighting a split of two matches at the MIT Invitational. The Jumbos lost to the host Engineers in three sets later in the day.
Tufts won 25-19 in the fourth set and 15-7 in the fifth set to overtake Endicott. The Jumbos were led by 13 kills from first-year Mary Maccabee (River Edge, NJ) and 12 by junior Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA). Sophomore Carolina Berger (Fort Lauderdale, FL) served five aces to add to the offense.
Berger was also a defensive leader with 25 digs. First-year Elizabeth Ahrens (Richmond, VA) had six block assists to go with a solo block.
Endicott (3-7) had taken a 2-1 lead with set scores of 18-25, 25-14, 25-23. For the Gulls, Callie Dolan had a match-high 16 kills and was also in doubles with 10 digs. Alleigh Vandemerkt served foru aces and went up for two solo blocks. Tori McIntyre finished with 17 digs.
The Jumbos took a 25-21, 25-15, 25-17 loss against MIT. Junior Jessica Ingrum (Highlands Ranch, CO) had a Tufts-high seven kills, while Hopper added six. Hopper's seven digs was the team high, while Maccabee finished with four blocks (one solo).
MIT (8-4) was paced by 13 kills each from Kristine Bunker and Tatiana Berger. Setter Nicole Gagnier amassed 40 assists. On defense, Tori Wuthrich finished with 12 digs.
The Jumbos (6-3) return to action at home on Wednesday night against Western England.
