MIDDLETOWN, CT - Defending NCAA Division III champion Tufts took the lead late in the first half and went on to add a pair of goals in the second period to lock up a 3-0 field hockey win over NESCAC rival Wesleyan here today.
It was the Jumbos' 11th win in a row over the Cardinals as they pushed their series lead to 30-15. Tufts now has a week off before hosting UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference tilt next Tuesday. Wesleyan will be at home in a NESCAC game versus Bates on Saturday.
With a 19-6 edge in total shots, including 12-1 in the first period, Tufts got the go-ahead and eventual winning goal off the stick of senior Emily Cannon (Atkinson, NH) in the 27th minute, as she put home a rebound of a previous shot saved by Cardinal sophomore netminder Sara Grundy, who finished with seven stops. It was the second goal of the season by Cannon.
Tufts made it 2-0 when sophomore Allison Rolfe (East Dennis, MA) worked down the right side and turned the corner just before the endline, and hit senior Chelsea Yogerst (San Diego, CA) with a centering pass that Yogerst put home from in close for her third goal of the year with 9:07 left in the contest.
Just 3:15 later, the Jumbos upped the margin to 3-0 when sophomore Dakota Sikes-Keilp (Montclair, NJ) collared a loose ball near the top of the circle on the left and sent home a rocket that hit the back of the net just above the board. It was her team-leading fifth goal of the year.
Tufts junior goalie Bri Keenan (Greenland, NH) made three saves in posting her third shutout of the campaign.
