MEDFORD – Tufts improved to 2-0 in NESCAC volleyball action with a 3-0 sweep of Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym.
The afternoon of volleyball started with the third straight win for the Jumbos, who are now 9-3 overall. Wesleyan drops to 0-2 in NESCAC play and 2-6 overall.
Wesleyan held a 9-8 lead in the first set before a first-year Elizabeth Ahrens (Richmond, VA) kill started a 5-0 run by the Jumbos, giving them the lead for good. Junior hitter Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) served the next four points, two of them on service aces.
Both teams stepped up the attack in the second set combining to hit .351 with 29 kills in 57 attempts and only nine errors. The offense kept the game tight and featured seven ties. The last tie was at 13-13 and a block assist by junior Juliana Goodbar (Berkeley, CA) and first-year Mary Maccabee (River Edge, NJ) gave the Jumbos the lead for good. Kate Centofanti (Cos Cob, CT) had five kills for Wesleyan and Goodbar had four for Tufts to lead each team's offense.
The Cardinals had their biggest lead of the match in the third set at 16-11. The Jumbos took the lead with a 10-1 run behind the serving of sophomore Carolina Berger (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and junior Jessica Ingrum (Highlands Ranch, CO). Big kills from Hopper, Goodbar and Maccabee fueled the run.
Kim Farris (Atlanta, GA) paced the Cardinals attack with 15 kills. Centofanti added 10 kills and two service aces. Newton's Monica Leslie had six kills and two blocks for Wesleyan.
Hopper finished with eight kills, three aces and a team-high 12 points for Tufts. Maccabee added seven kills while Goodbar and Ahrens had six kills each.
