MEDFORD - Tufts improved to 3-0 in NESCAC action and 10-4 overall with a 3-0 win over Connecticut College (6-5, 2-1) at Cousens Gym Saturday afternoon.
The win moves Tufts into a first place tie with Williams in the NESCAC. Tufts travels to Williams on Friday October 4 for an 7:00 p.m. match. On Saturday the Jumbos will travel to Amherst for a 2:00 p.m. match.
Junior Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) led the Jumbos attack with 15 kills, five in each set. The outside hitter also had a team-high 12 digs.
Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, CA) returned after an 15 day injury abscence and made an impact. The junior middle hitter had seven kills, including the set-winner in the first two sets.
In the opening set the Jumbos hit an impressive .500 on 13 kills in 26 attempts and no errors. Hopper had five kills, while Kuhel and Elizabeth Ahrens (Richmond, VA) each had three. The offense carried Tufts to a 25-15 first set win.
The second set was closer as the teams, who came into the day tied for second in the NESCAC, went back and forth with the last tie at 13-13. First-year Mary Maccabee (River Edge, NJ) served four straight points, including an ace and kill by Hopper to give the Jumbos the lead for good at 17-13.
The final set saw the Camels take their biggest lead of the match at 10-6. The Jumbos came back to tie the set at 13-13 fueled by two kills by Maccabee. Tufts took the lead for good at 14-13 on a kill by Hopper and then held on for the 25-23 win.
Connecticut College's Alex Mcdevitt of Medfield, MA had six kills, two aces and five digs. Caroline Martin (Palo Alto, CA) led the Camels with nine kills and 12 digs. Emily Aterbury had (Austin, TX) had 27 assists.
