SOMERVILLE - Visiting Trinity College scored twice in the first seven minutes to remain undefeated with a 3-1 win at Tufts in NESCAC women's soccer action Sunday at Kraft Field. Junior Elisa Dolan had a goal and an assist for Trinity.
The Bantams improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Tufts saw its four-game winning streak end. The Jumbos dropped to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the league.
Three minutes in, Trinity went up 1-0 when first-year Laura Nee made a short corner-kick pass to Dolan at the edge of the box. Dolan blasted the ball into the top right of the net for her second goal of the season.
Just four minutes later, junior Karyn Barrett and sophomore Abbey Lake worked give and go action in the box for Lake's team-high fifth goal of the fall and Trinity was already in charge at 2-0.
However, Tufts kept charging and it payed off as they narrowed the margin to 2-1 in the 32nd minute. Junior Carla Kruyff lofted a 30-yard free kick into the upper left part of the net and the Jumbos were in it.
The hosts had a good opportunity to tie it less than five minutes later as Katie Coyle had the ball at the top of the box, but was blocked at the last second.
The Bantams reestablished their two-goal lead with under four minutes remaining until halftime. Dolan dribbled beautifully in the box and once the Tufts goalie commtted she gave an easy pass to first-year Andi Nicholson for the goal.
A busy first half saw 15 total shots, with nine by Trinity. They also had a 3-1 advantage in corners for the first 45.
The second half was much more defensive oriented as only seven shots were taken, five by Trinity. They finished with a 14-8 count in shots overall.
Sophomore goalie Monica DiFiori made two saves to earn the victory for Trinity. Senior Kristin Wright also had two in the Tufts goal.
Tufts is off until hosting Middlebury next Saturday at 12:30 pm. The Bantams play non-conference action at home against Westfield State on Tuesday at 4 pm.
