WALTHAM - Junior Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, CA) had 18 kills against Brandeis and 13 versus Wellesley as the Tufts volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of the Brandeis Invitational Saturday. The Jumbos defeated the host Judges in five and then lost to the Blue in four.
Kuhel was selected to the All-Tournament team as Tufts finished the weekend with a 3-1 record. On Saturday, they took a back-and-forth match against Brandeis (3-3) 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 17-15. Undefeated Wellesley (5-0) then ended Tufts' stay at the tourney on a sour note with 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-13 scores.
Kuhel, junior tri-captain Jessica Ingrum (Highlands Ranch, CO), and junior Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) all reached double-figure kills against Brandeis. Sophomore Kyra Baum (Boca Raton, FL) averaged better than 10 assists per set with 52 in five. Hopper and junior Rebecca Rubin (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) finished with 18 digs apiece while first-year Elizabeth Ahrens (Richmond, VA) continued to be an early force at the net with seven blocks (three solo).
Brandeis also had three in double-figure kills, led by Liz Hood's 18. Si-Si Hensley recorded 12 kills and served three aces for the Judges. Elsie Bernaiche was the digs leader for the match with 25.
In the Wellesley match, Tufts was not as effective hitting as Kuhel's 13 kills were the only double-digit number. She made just one error in 20 attempts for a .600 efficiency. Clay led defensively with 16 digs and Ahrens recorded five blocks (three solo).
Wellesley College volleyball head coach Dorothy Webb earned her 500th and 501st career victories as the Blue went 2-0 on the final day of the 2013 Brandeis Invitational. Sydney Carfagno was spectacular for the Blue, racking up 23 kills, hitting at a .364 clip, while also recording a match-high of 22 digs, with four aces and three blocks. Kellyn O'Brady also recorded a double-double in the match, totaling 12 kills and 11 digs. Also for the Blue, Traci Hamanaka recorded 17 digs, while Caitlin Laughlin totaled six blocks.
The Jumbos open their home season on Tuesday night at Cousens Gym hosting Colby-Sawyer. The match begins at 7 pm.
