Sabety Leads Tufts Past UMass Boston Men's Basketball, 78-56

BOSTON - Led by big-man Hunter Sabety's game-high 21 points and seven blocks the Jumbos of Tufts University defeated UMass Boston men's basketball by the final of 78-56 Thursday evening in the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium in non-conference action.

For the Jumbos they improved to 8-8 ending a two-game skid in the 40th meeting between the two programs. With the loss the Beacons fell to 5-11 having dropped their sixth straight contest.

Sabety was dominant as the 6'8" freshman went 9-of-11 from the field, 3-of-5 at the line.  Of his seven blocks five came in the first half, while he also grabbed a total of five rebounds.  Ben Ferris and Stephen Haladyna each dropped in 11 points to help carry the Jumbos to the win, while Kwame Firempong finished with 10 boards.

For the Beacons, junior Carl Joseph did everything he could to keep his team in the contest as the Brockton native finished with 19 points.  Sophomore Omar Benabicha also played a solid game for the Beacons as he finished with 12 points and two assists in 31 minutes of playing time.

From the field the Jumbos shot 46.4% (32-69), while the Beacons finished shooting 31.8% (21-66).  Tufts went 18-for-35 in the first half to take a 42-21 lead over UMass Boston into the break.  They then returned in the second to push their lead to as much as 31 to seal the non-conference win.  The Jumbos' big men which are all 6'7" or taller dominated the paint, especially in the first half scoring 24 of their 42 points.

UMass Boston finished the game on a strong note as they outscored Tufts 14-6 over the last seven minutes.

Tufts returns to NESCAC action on Saturday at home against Bates. Game time is 4 pm. The Beacons play next on Saturday when they travel to Keene State College for a 3 pm Little East Conference game.
