Tufts Men's Basketball Picks Up 59-55 NESCAC Win Over Bates College

MEDFORD - The Tufts basketball team escaped a comeback by Bates College in their 59-55 win Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym. Stephen Haladyna (South Hamilton, MA) led the way for the Jumbos with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Tufts improved to 9-8, 1-3 and picked up their first conference win of the season. With the loss the Bobcats fell to 9-7, 1-3.

Freshman Hunter Sabety (Oceanside, NY) had 12 points, four rebounds and three blocks. Ben Ferris (Essex Junction, VT) pulled down a team-high nine boards and senior Oliver Cohen (Lower Merion, PA) dropped in eight points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Drew Madsen (San Diego, CA) came off the bench and chipped in six points to go along with seven rebounds.

For the Bobcats, Graham Safford scored a game-high 17 points to go with four rebounds and four dishes. Mike Boornazian picked up a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Jumbos found themselves up 9-1 at the 14:46 mark on two treys by Haladyna followed by senior Tommy Folliard (Richmond, VA). Two free throws from Ben Ferris pushed the lead to 12 with 5:23 remaining, but the Bobcats responded with a 4-0 run on a dunk by Mike Boornazian and layup by Luke Matarazzofor a 25-17 score. The home team went into halftime with a 27-17 lead.

It was a back and forth game in the opening minutes of the second half until Sabety threw down dunks on back-to-back posessions to give the Jumbos a 13-point lead with 16:45 left in the game. Down by 16 with 13:11 remaining, the Bobcats began a run that gave them a 49-47 lead thanks to a three-pointer by Safford at the 5:57 mark.

Back-to-back jumpers by Folliard and Ferris was good enough for a 56-53 lead and sealed the win for the Jumbos as they came away victorious in the 59-55 final.  

Tufts returns to NESCAC action Friday at Connecticut College at 8 pm. Bates hosts Maine Presque Isle Tuesday at 7 pm.
