MEDFORD – The Tufts women's volleyball team hadn't played at home in nearly a month when they took the court in Cousens Gym against NESCAC rival Wesleyan Friday night. But, they picked up exactly where they left off, cruising to a 3-0 win. All three sets were decided by the same, 25-16, score.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the first set, but five consecutive points behind the serve of senior tri-captain Isabel Kuhel would put the score back in the Jumbo's favor. The two teams would trade leads until the Jumbos earned the 10-9 edge on a kill from junior Maddie Kuppe. From there the Jumbos maintained the lead, and moved to a 25-16 win.
The second set started much the same with the visitors jumping out to an early lead but not being able to keep it. The Cardinals were able to even the score a couple times during the set, but never able to take the lead again. Three consecutive kills from senior tri-captain Hayley Hopper helped the Jumbos take a 20-13 lead and move on to a 25-16 win again.
In the third set the Jumbos took the lead and kept that lead, eventually winning by the same score as the first two sets, 25-16. Kuppe finished the night with 12 kills in 19 attempts for an impressive, .632 hitting percentage. Hopper turned in 11 kills of her own and Kuhel finished with five kills. Sophomore Elizabeth Ahrens finished with four kills and five blocks. First-year Alex Garrett led the Jumbos with eight digs, while junior Kyra Baum took care of the setting and finished with 30 assists.
For the Cardinals, first-year Sarah Swenson led the team with seven kills while classmate Tyla Taylor had five of her own and added 11 digs. Sophomore Rachel Savage finished with eight digs, and senior Claire Larson tallied 15 assists on the night.
With the loss, Wesleyan moves to 9-7 overall with a 1-5 NESCAC mark. The Jumbos are now 10-7, with a 4-1 NESCAC record.
Wesleyan now travels to Connecticut College for a 2:00 pm match tomorrow. The Jumbos will host Trinity at 2:00 pm on Saturday at Cousens Gym.
