| Sophomore Tim Nichols was the second Tufts scorer today |
BOSTON - The Jumbo men's cross country team was 18th overall, but third among NESCAC squads and fourth in the New England Division III ranks at today's 2014 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championship competed in cold and wet conditions at Franklin Park.
Led by senior co-captain Nick Guarnaccia, Tufts' 429 team score was 18th out of 39 Division I, II and III teams at the race. Head coach Ethan Barron's Jumbos trailed only Middlebury and Amherst among conference teams. In addition to those two, MIT was the only other Division III unit in front of the Jumbos.
Guarnaccia's 25:21.40 time led the Jumbos on the eight-kilometer course and was 52nd overall. He was closely followed by Tufts' #2 scorer sophomore Tim Nichols whose 25:23.89 was 58th in the field of 262 competitors overall.
Sophomore Luke O'Connor came across the finish line in a 25:35.81 time for 79th place overall. The fourth and fifth Jumbo scorers were senior Colin McCrory in 25:52.16 (113th) and senior co-captain Marshall Pagano at 26:03.28 (127th).
Junior Michael Curley and senior Greg Hardy both were close to scoring for Tufts. Curley's time was 26:04.30 and Hardy finished in 26:05.44.
Division I Providence College won the race with a 72 team score. Division II American International College junior Mike Biwott was the individual champion by over 23 seconds (24:10.75).
With the NESCAC Championship race approaching on November 1, Tufts has a final invitational next Saturday at Connecticut College.
