MEDFORD – Wrapping up a productive weekend at home the Tufts volleyball team moved to 5-1 in NESCAC play with a 3-0 win over Trinity at Cousens Gym on Saturday afternoon.  With the win the Jumbos move into second place in the NESCAC standings.

The Jumbos jumped out to an early lead in the first set but the Bantams were able to even the score at nine apiece.  The Bantams then moved out to a 15-12 lead, but that's as far as they would get as the Jumbos evened the score at 16, and eventually earned the 25-19 win.

The home team once again jumped out to an early lead in the second set, and used seven consecutive points behind the serve of senior tri-captain Hayley Hopper to earn a 14-4 lead.  The Bantams scored a point, and the Jumbos went on to add six more points behind the serve of junior Carolina Berger to push the lead to 21-5.  The Jumbos eventually won the second set 25-10.

In the third set, the Jumbos took the lead and kept it, eventually winning, 25-13.  Hopper finished with ten kills for the Jumbos while junior Maddie Kuppe had eight kills, senior tri-captain Isabel Kuhel contributed six kills and sophomore Mary Maccabee added five of her own.   Kuhel finished with three solo blocks and two block assists.

Hopper also led the Jumbos in digs, finishing with eight.  Maccabee, Berger and junior Kyra Baum all finished with five digs.  Baum took care of the setting for the Jumbos, finishing with 26 assists.   The Jumbos also had nine service aces on the day, with Berger finishing with three, and Hopper and Baum each having two.

For the Bantams, junior Kate Giddens finished with nine kills and classmate Hunter Drews had six kills.  Sophomore Kristen Cooprider finished with a match-high nine digs, while junior Gina Buzzeli had eight digs and ten assists.

Trinity will resume play on Friday, October 17 when they host Middlebury at 8:00 pm.  The Jumbos will be back at home next weekend for Parents Weekend.  They host Williams on Friday, October 17 at 8:00 pm and take on Amherst at 1:00 pm and Endicott at 5:00 pm on Saturday.
