AMHERST - The Tufts volleyball team closed out a perfect 3-0 record with a 3-0 win over Brandeis at the Hall of Fame Invitational at Amherst on Saturday evening. Senior tri-captain Isabel Kuhel was named to the All-Tournament team, finishing the weekend with 25 kills, four service aces, four solo blocks and 12 block assists.
Tufts opened up play in the tournament on Friday night with a 3-0 win over Westfield State. Saturday's first opponent for the Jumbos was Wellesley, who they topped, 3-1. The win over Brandeis wrapped up tournament play for the Jumbos.
The Jumbos took an early lead in the first set and were able to maintain a comfortable lead for much of the set. Helping that was six consecutive points behind the serve of junior Carolina Berger, moving the score to 17-9. The Jumbos went on to take the first set, 25-14.
The serve of Berger helped the Jumbos in the second set as well, as they gained an early 5-0 lead behind the junior's serve once again. The Jumbos gained their biggest lead when they scored nine consecutive points with junior Kyra Baum serving, two of those points coming from service aces. Tufts would win the second set 25-9.
The Judges once again found themselves in an early hole in the third set. This time five kills from Kuhel in the third set alone helped the Jumbos to a 25-16 win.
Kuhel finished the match with a team-high seven kills while fellow seniors and tri-captains Hayley Hopper and Jessica Ingrum each had six kills. Junior Carolina Berger led the Jumbos with ten digs and Baum had six digs. Baum also took care of the setting for the Jumbos, earning 18 assists. Kuhel also had two solo blocks and three block assists in the match.
For the Judges, first-year Jessie Moore and juniors Maddie Engeler and Summer Koop all finished with five kills. Senior Elsie Bernaiche had a match high 15 digs and junior Maggie Swenson was credited with 14 assists. Moore also had four service aces for the Judges.
This match closed out play for both teams in the tournament. Brandeis is now 5-20 on the season. The Judges will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Lasell for a 7:00 pm match.
The Jumbos move their record to 17-7 this year. Back in action on Friday, Tufts will play at Hamilton at 7:00 pm and follow that with a NESCAC-schedule-concluding match against Middlebury at 2:00 pm on Sunday.
