MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The women's squash team opened up their season at the Wesleyan Round Robin on Saturday afternoon. They dropped a 9-0 decision to Wesleyan and then fell 6-3 to Mount Holyoke. The Jumbos will take on Smith and William Smith on Sunday to complete Round Robin play.
Against Mount Holyoke the Jumbos received wins in the second, fourth and fifth positions. Picking up this season right where she left off last year, senior tri-captain Paige Dahlman earned an 11-6, 11-8, 14-12 win in the number two position against Samantha Rosado. First-year Lauren Banner picked up her first collegiate win in the number four position, defeating Xianger Fei by scores of 11-3, 11-7, 11-7. The last Jumbo win came from sophomore Anna Bezahler in the number five position as she was able to hand Allison Shiling a 11-5, 11-3, 11-8 loss.
Senior tri-captain Ann Bellinger was able to take the second game in the number three spot, but wasn't able to top Sanjna Merchant, falling 11-9, 5-11, 11-7, 11-5. Similarly, in the sixth slot, first-year Gabrielle Salomon took the second game but ended up falling 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5.
Rookie Claudia Udolf fell to Brandy Williamson in the number one position, 11-7, 11-4, 11-2. Classmate Nellie Harvey was bested by her Lyon counterpart in the number eight position, and junior Tammara Gary played in the ninth position, but lost by default.
Mount Holyoke is now 2-3 on the season. They lost to William Smith earlier in the day on Saturday in Round Robin action. They will take the courts again on Sunday when they face off with Smith and Wesleyan.
The Jumbos move to 0-2 on the season. They also played earlier in the day, falling to Wesleyan, 9-0. On Sunday the Jumbos will face Smith (9:00 am) and William Smith (10:30 am) to round out Round Robin play.
