CLAREMONT, FL - The Tufts softball team tonight looked a lot like it did when we saw them last, winning the NCAA title in Wisconsin last May. The Jumbos opened the 2014 season in Florida Saturday night with an 8-0, five-inning win against Ramapo.
Allyson Fournier was in the pitcher's circle hurling a one-hit, 12-K shutout. Senior catcher Jo Clair clouted a home run, as did junior 3B Bri Keenan. Tufts was flawless in the field, adding up to a quick win.
The Jumbos struck fast, with senior LF Sara Hedtler hitting a one-out double to left center in the first. She scored on a single by junior 2B Gracie Marshall. Keenan then homered with one out in the second and Clair did the same in the third for a 3-0 Jumbo lead.
Fournier was touched for a single by sophomore Mikayla Meledez with two outs in the first, but otherwise was nearly unhittable. She struck out three in the first, two in the second, and three in the third to get started.
Tufts would score five times unearned in the fifth. Senior RF Chrissie Massrey hit a two-run double and also scored, while Keenan picked up her second RBI with a single. Junior CF Michelle Cooprider doubled and singled in the inning.
After striking out two more in the fourth, Fournier ended the game with two more K's in the bottom of the fifth to give Tufts the eight-run victory.
Of their 10 hits in five innings, Keenan was 3 for 3, while Cooprider and Hedtler went 2 for 4. Clair scored twice. Senior Harley Masiello took the loss for Ramapo, allowing 10 hits and eight runs (three earned) with two walks and a strikeout in the full five innings.
Tufts stays on the field to play Southern Maine in an 8:30 start Saturday night.
