CLERMONT, FL - In a game that was originally supposed to start at 11 am and was delayed a few times due to poor field conditions, senior pitcher Lauren Giglio and the Tufts offense had no problem performing once the action began in a 9-0 Jumbo softball victory over UMass Boston.
The five-inning win was the third eight-run rule victory in five games for the Jumbos, who improved to 4-1. They hadn't played since Sunday after yesterday's games were cancelled due to rain. UMass Boston fell to 1-4.
Giglio (2-0) allowed just three hits and no runs in the five innings, striking out six and walking no one. In the only threat against her, the Beacons put runners on second and third in the third. However, Giglio got a ground ball and fly out to keep UMB off the scoreboard.
The Jumbos had 11 hits, including a 3 for 4 game with three rbi's by first-year Cassie Ruscz. Senior LF Sara Hedtler went 2 for 2 with two runs and two rbis. Junior CF Michelle Cooprider finished 2 for 4 with two runs.
A two-run double by Ruscz in the bottom of the first got Tufts started. They added two more runs in the second, including an rbi single by Hedtler. Though they threatened in both the third and fourth off UMass Boston hurler Jillian Shepherd, she kept the margin at 4-0.
Tufts won the game with five in the fifth. Hedtler singled home another run and two more scored on an outfield error by the Beacons. Ruscz singled home the eighth run and the ninth run scored on the same play with another UMass Boston error.
Beacon Emily Gray took the pitching loss, allowing five hits and four runs in two innings.
