CLERMONT, FL - Tufts junior Allyson Fournier and North Central senior Vlasta Mangia engaged in an outstanding pitcher's duel won by Tufts, 1-0, in college softball action Saturday in Florida. With the win, Tufts finished its spring trip with a 12-1 record.
Fournier went seven innings allowing five hits and no runs with 11 strikeouts and a walk. In six innings, Mangia gave up three hits and an unearned run while striking out five with a walk.
North Central had runners on first and second in the top of the first following a one-out single by Kayla Antle. However, Fournier got a pop up and a strikeout to end the threat.
Mangia retired the first six Jumbos before walking Kayla Holland to lead off the third. After two outs were made advancing Holland to third, she scored on a Cardinals error. That would be the lone run of the game.
North Central would get the lead-off batters to second in both the foruth and fifth. Fournier was able to end both innings without any damage.
The Jumbos nearly added a run in the fifth. Sophomore SS Christina Raso singled with one out. She was thrown out at home though trying to score on a hit by first-year Maggie Hoffman.
In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals put runners on first and second with one out on singles by Taylor Ryan and Cecie Portillo. Once again Fournier bore down and got the outs she needed to earn the win.
North Central's Portillo at 2 for 3 was the only hitter with a crooked number in any category for the game.
The Cardinals fell to 3-2 overall with the loss.
