Tufts Softball Opens Conference Divisional Play with 7-1 Win Over Trinity

MEDFORD – The Tufts University softball team opened NESCAC East play with a 7-1 win over Trinity on Friday afternoon at Spicer Field. Senior Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) and first year Cassie Ruscz (Wolcott, CT) each hit a home run to combine for five rbis.

The Bantams took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Abigail Ostrom drove home Elizabeth McQuaid with a double to center field.

The Jumbos got their offense going in the bottom of the fourth when Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) led off with a single to center field, Clair walked and Ruscz homered to left field giving Tufts a 3-1 lead.

Clair added to the Jumbo lead in the bottom of the fifth with her bomb to center field driving in Hedtler from second base for a 5-1 lead. Tufts added two more runs in the fifth for the 7-1 final.

Tufts starter Lauren Giglio (Niskayuna, NY) improved to 7-1 after tossing a complete game, allowing one earned run on three hits.

Hannah King (4-8) took the loss for the Bantams after allowing six hits. Lily Jewell entered the game and pitched 1.2 innings of relief allowing two runs on two hits.

The Jumbos are now 17-3 (1-0 NESCAC East) while Trinity falls to 5-14 (3-3). The two teams will play a double-header tomorrow starting at 12 pm at Spicer Field.
