WATERVILLE, ME - Allyson Fournier threw a no-hitter in the second game and Jo Clair homered in both contests as second-ranked and defending national champion Tufts University took 8-1 and 10-0 wins over Colby College in NESCAC East softball Friday. The victories earned Tufts its 10th straight East Division pennant and 12th overall.
Tufts moved to 30-3 overall and 10-0 in conference play. They stretched their NESCAC East winning streak to 35 games with the two victories. The Mules fell to 7-18 overall and 1-10 in the league. The two teams will play again on Colby's Crafts Field on Saturday at 10:30 am.
Fournier had 10 strikeouts and one walk in moving to 14-0. She has 190 strikeouts and just 10 walks this spring. The no-hitter is her third this season and the 10th of her Tufts career.
Cassie Ruscz belted a grand slam homer in a seven-run fourth inning for the Jumbos. The Mules had two outs and runners were on first and second with no runs in when Tufts rallied for the seven runs. Sara Hedtler added a two-run double in the inning.
Clair smacked a three-homer in the top of the seventh inning. Michelle Cooprider and Gracie Marshall both had three hits in the game.
In the opener, Lauren Giglio tossed six innings and struck out four while walking one for Tufts.
The Jumbos scored all eight of their runs in the fourth inning after the Mules had taken a 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning. Clair started the fourth inning off with a single and later added a three-run homer. Christina Raso had an RBI double in the inning.
Cooprider once again had three hits to lead the Jumbos in the nightcap.
Colby's Meaghan Lewia led off the second inning with a single, took second on a groundout, and moved to third when Carylanne Wolfington singled. With Wolfington attempting to steal second, Lewia came home with the Mules' lone run.
Katie McLaughlin had two hits for Colby in the first game.
