WATERVILLE, ME - Cassie Ruscz belted two home runs and Erica County pitched a complete game as Tufts University improved to 11-0 in NESCAC East play with a 10-1 win over Colby College on Saturday at Crafts Field.
The second-ranked Jumbos are 31-3 overall. They will play for their third straight prefect NESCAC East season tomorrow at Bowdoin in a noon start. Head coach Cheryl Milligan's Jumbos have won 36 straight in the division overall.
The Mules end their season at 7-19 and 1-11 in the league.
Tufts scored three times in the first inning and added four more in the second to take control early. Michelle Cooprider opened the game with a double and moved to third on a single by Sara Hedtler. Jo Clair reached on a fielder's choice and Cooprider came in with the first run. Ruscz followed with a two-run homer to left field for a 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, Bri Keenan also started the inning with a double and moved to third on a single by Christina Raso. Cooprider followed with her second double of the young game to score both runners. After an out, Clair singled Cooprider to third base to force a pitching change. Ruscz had a single to bring in Cooprider and Clair scored on a sacrifice fly by Gracie Marshall.
The Jumbos added an unearned run in the fourth. Hedtler opened the inning with a single and Clair was walked. Ruscz reached on an error and Hedtler scored on the play for an 8-0 lead.
Colby also scored a lone run in the fourth inning. Carylanne Wolfington had a one-out walk and took third on a single by Grace Farnkoff. Kelsey Park had an rbi groundout to bring in Wolfington.
Ruscz opened the top of the seventh inning with her second homer of the game. The other run was unearned after Marissa Heyer reached on an error and later scored on a single by Keenan.
County had two strikeouts, two walks and allowed five hits for Tufts. Megan Michie came into the game in relief in the second inning for Colby and allowed just one earned run in 5.2 innings.
Ruscz finished with three hits, four rbis and a pair of runs. Cooperider added her two doubles to go with two runs and two rbi. Keenan finished with three hits, while Hedtler and Raso both had two hits.
Erica Pulford and Emily Schatz both had two hits for Colby. Grace Farnkoff had the other hit.
