WILLIAMSTOWN - Tufts junior Allyson Fournier scattered four hits and sophomore SS Christina Raso hit a two-run double Saturday, lifting the Jumbos into the finals of the 2014 NESCAC Softball Tournament via a 4-1 victory over host Williams College at Cole Field.
Fournier improved to 18-0 on the season while Tufts moved to 36-3. The Ephs fell to 23-10 and will face Middlebury at 3 pm in the second elimination game of the day.
Williams took a 1-0 lead on Fournier and the Jumbos in the top of the third when first-year Alison Michalik rocketed a solo home run to right field. It was just the second home run allowed this season by Fournier.
Tufts scored two in the bottom of the fourth off of Williams ace Emma Harrington. Chrissie Massrey walked and with two outs Carrie Copacino singled to left. Raso, Tufts' number nine hitter, then hit a line drive deep to left field that eluded Eph outfielder Erica Li for a two-run double and the lead.
The Jumbos added a run in the fifth when Cassie Ruscz launched a solo home run to left center with two outs for a 3-1 lead. Shelby Lipson added a pinch-hit RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth for the final Tufts run.
Bri Keenan was 2 for 3 for Tufts, while Raso was 1 for 3 with the two RBI. Fournier allowed four hits over seven frames, walking one and striking out seven.
Mo Frank was 2 for 3 for Williams while Kacey Cramer and Michalik had one hit each. Harrington took the loss, allowing nine hits and four runs, all earned, while walking one and fanning four over six innings.
Tufts has won eight NESCAC titles, including the last two. They need one win tomorrow to take the 2014 title. A loss in the opening game would require a second winner-takes-all game to follow.
