WATERVILLE, Maine --- The fifth-ranked Tufts University field hockey team used a smothering defense and two second-half goals to take a 2-0 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.
Tufts, which moves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the NESCAC, has not given up a goal in three games. Colby (1-2 overall, 0-2 NESCAC) will play host to Manhattanville College at noon Sunday.
The Jumbos had a 23-3 shot advantage and a 13-2 margin in penalty corners. Tufts, though, could not manage a goal in the first half.
The Jumbos struck quickly in the second half on a Colby turnover. A defender appeared to slip while trying to clear a ball for the Mules. Sophomore Dominique Zarrella made the steal and her centering pass found junior Rachel Terveer for the goal just 2:09 into the half.
Zarrella then put the game away at 49:07 of the contest when she scored off a rebound. Junior Dakota Sikes-Keilp ripped a shot that goaltender Sarah Evans made a nice save on, but the rebound went to Zarrella and she flicked the ball into the cage.
Senior co-captain Bri Keenan had to make just one save to earn her third shutout of the season for Tufts. Evans made eight of her 12 stops in the second half for Colby.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they host NESCAC foe Wesleyan for a 6:00 pm game in Medford.
