CAMBRIDGE – After a dominating win at home the night before the Tufts Volleyball team carried that momentum into Saturday, topping DeSales at the MIT Invitational, 3-2. The Jumbos won the first two sets, but the Bulldogs would not give up, taking the second two sets to force a fifth set. Tufts was able to win the fifth one, earning the 3-2 win.
The Jumbos are now 3-0 in MIT Invitational play and have one game left on their tournament schedule. The Bulldogs are 2-1 in tournament play, and will take on Bates to round out their play in the tournament.
Junior Carolina Berger had a massive 37 digs in the match for the Jumbos. Additionally, Tufts had 14 aces serving with six different players having at least one service ace as sophomore Frances Brumley, junior Maddie Kuppe and senior tri-captain Isabel Kuhel each had three.
The Jumbos were led offensively in the match by senior tri-captain Hayley Hopper who had 20 kills and 13 digs. Kuppe had 15 kills and 16 digs, while senior tri-captain Jessica Ingrum had eight kills and 13 digs. The setting was done Brumley who had 34 assists and junior Kyra Baum who turned in 14 assists of her own.
For the Bulldogs senior Julie Blessing turned in 11 kills while fellow classmate Chrissy Banos had ten kills of her own. Rookie Logan Wieziolowski had a team high 28 digs. Sophmore Lisa Wallitsch took care of the setting for the Bulldogs, finishing with 38 assists and 14 digs.
DeSales (9-3) had no time to rest as they took on Bates at 1:00 pm on Saturday to round out their play at the tournament. The Jumbos (4-3) had a game break before they would take on local rival Springfield at 3:00 pm.
