MEDFORD – The #7 ranked Tufts field hockey team used three first half goals to gain an edge against NESCAC rival Wesleyan, and topped the Cardinals 4-0 on Bello Field Tuesday night. The Jumbos (4-0, 3-0 NESCAC) move their shutout streak to four, as they have not given up a goal this season.
Wesleyan (1-4, 0-2 NESCAC) stymied the Jumbos offense for a while, but senior co-captain Brittany Norfleet put the Jumbos on the board 17:46 into the first period. With lots of action in front of the net, Cardinal keeper Sara Grundy came out to try and knock the ball away, but instead the ball deflected off her and Norfleet was able to knock it in for her first goal of the season to give the Jumbos the 1-0 advantage.
Just under ten minutes later the Jumbos would make it 2-0 with a goal from sophomore Elle Chrupcala. Norfleet took the penalty corner, sent the ball to junior Dakota Sikes-Keilp who dished the ball off to the right side where Chrupcala was able to fire off a shot that got past Grundy.
The 3-0 lead came from the stick of first-year Mary Travers. Once again started by a penalty corner, sophomore Annie Artz sent the ball to the front of the goal where Mary Travers was able to tip the ball in for the third Jumbo goal of the day.
Sophomore Dominique Zarrella made it 4-0 with her fourth goal of the season just over twenty minutes into the second half. Norfleet was able to make her way past a couple Wesleyan defenders and pass the ball off to Zarrella who was waiting just outside the left corner of the goal.
The Jumbos finished with 12 shots on the day, eight of those coming in the first half. Wesleyan finished with two shots. Tufts held the advantage in corners as well, having eight penalty corners to Wesleyans' one.
Senior co-captain Bri Keenan earned the shutout in the cage, making one save. The shutout is the fourth of the season for her. Grundy finished with three saves in goal for the Cardinals.
Wesleyan will be back in action when they travel to Bates this Saturday for a 11:00 am contest with the Bobcats. The Jumbos are also on the road this weekend as they travel down to Virginia to take on #9 Christopher Newport on Saturday at 11:00 am.
