Tufts' Plays to Double OT Tie Against Amherst in Physical Battle

Box Score

MEDFORD - The Jumbos and the Lord Jeffs renewed their fierce rivalry with a double overtime contest that ended in a 1-1 tie. Tufts' winless streak against Amherst extends to nine. Jason Kayne scored for the Jumbos, while Milton Rico notched the Amherst goal on a PK.

Scott Greenwood had two important back-to-back saves in the draw

The two sides played evenly all afternoon in a physical match. The Jumbos got on the board first with a flawless strike from Kayne. Maxime Hoppenot created space on the left side and found Nate Majumder at the top of the 18. Majumder dished to Kayne a few yards away and Kayne took one dribble to his left after which he ripped a laser that curled into the right upper 90 where no goalie could even hope to reach.

After a hand ball in the box, Lord Jeff midfielder Rico stepped to the penalty spot with just under ten minutes to go in the half. He confidently buried the ball in the back of the net as goalkeeper Scott Greenwood guessed the wrong way.

After knotting the score at one, Amherst created two more dangerous chances just before halftime. Midfielder Mikey Hoeksema launched a corner that found 6'6" middie Andrew Orozco, but his header attempt was tipped over the corssbar by Greenwood. Off the ensuing corner, forward Greg Singer rifled a shot from inside the 18 that snuck through a hole in the crowd, and Greenwood was again forced to make the miraculous stop.

In the second half, balanced play continued and each team had several chances to take the lead. Kayne and Hoppenot played a give and go on the right side that resulted in a Hoppenot low cross almost finding a waiting Kayne, who had relocated to the middle of the box. The Amherst defense did well to thwart the effort.

Later in the half, Orozco had a clear chance on net after a flick off a set piece, but he was off-target, hitting the outside netting. Kyle Volpe also had a chance late in regulation, but his shot skittered just wide, leaving the game 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes.

Peter Lee-Kramer picked up his second yellow card of the match with seven and a half minutes remaining in regulation. Amherst committed 27 fouls, while the Jumbos had 16.

Tufts outshot Amherst 5-1 in the overtime periods, but neither the Jumbos nor the Lord Jeffs could convert the golden goal. With under a minute left, the Jumbos had a free kick just outside Amherst's 18, but Kayne's effort was blocked by the wall of the Lord Jeffs.

The Jumbos picked up their second double overtime tie in a row and will have a week off to rest before going on the road next Saturday to face NESCAC foe Middlebury.
