COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a tough opening day at the Colorado College Classic, the Tufts volleyball team rebounded in a big way, coming back to beat East Texas Baptist University (ETBU), 3-1 on Saturday night. The Jumbos dropped the opening set before coming back to take three straight sets and earn the win.
The Jumbos were edged in a tough opening set, falling 25-21. Tufts was down early in the second set, finding themselves in a 3-0 hole quickly. But, two straight service aces by senior tri-captain Isabel Kuhel tied the set at ten apiece. The Jumbos were able to keep momentum after that; coming away with a 25-18 win in set two.
Tufts carried that lead into the third set, taking an early 5-0 lead. ETBU was able to tie up the set at 13, but the Jumbos took the lead back and cruised to a 25-20 win. In the fourth set ETBU was up late, 20-15, but the Jumbos were able to rally and came up with the 25-23 win to notch their first win of the season.
Senior tri-captain Hayley Hopper was the offensive leader for the Jumbos with 19 kills, while Kuhel had 11 of her own and fellow classmate and tri-captain Jessica Ingrum turned in 10 kills.
Junior Carolina Berger had 20 digs for the Jumbos and classmate Kyra Baum came up with 12 digs of her own while taking on the setting duties and adding 42 assists.
For the Tigers first-year Danielle Miller had 11 kills and junior Kolby Sharp had 10 kills. The setting duties were split as senior Kayla Taylor finished with 23 assists while sophomore Nicole Buzzard had 20 of her own.
The match was the first of the day for Tufts (1-2) as the Jumbos will take on the host, #7 ranked Colorado College at 8:00 pm. That match will round out tournament play for the Jumbos.
ETBU (1-7) fell to #17 ranked Clarkson earlier in the day to complete their tournament play. They will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to the University of Texas at Dallas for a 7:00 pm match.
