AMHERST - Under a high blue sky and amid spectacular fall foliage, the Tufts Varsity Women's Crew invaded the home course of the UMass Minutewomen Sunday and came away with some serious hardware.
In the two-race format that pitted more experienced scullers in singles and doubles in the morning and quads and triples in the afternoon, with their less experienced teammates the reverse, the Jumbos came away with a significant medal haul. UMass hosted the "Seven Sisters" Regatta, with Tufts and Ithaca College competing, for the third successive year.
Sophomore Emma Conroy swept the field in the "A" Single, and the "A" Quad of Conroy and seniors Emma Wells, Rachel Siegler, and Claire Sleigh finished second. Siegler and senior Kate Ainsworth finished third in the "A" Double, with Libby Lichter and Maddie Orzeske fourth, and senior Leah Fortson along with Orzeske and Elana DeSantis won the inaugural Seven Sisters "A" level Triple Race.
Tufts was well represented in the "B" level races as well, the highlight being freshman Libby Lichter finishing third in the "B" single.
The Jumbos will put their sculling blades aside this week, and contend for honors in the Women's Collegiate Eight event at the Head of the Charles next Sunday. All of the Jumbo Crews will close out their fall season at the Head of the Fish on October 31 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
