When The Jumbos Will Race
The NCAA has announced dramatic weather-related changes to this year's NCAA Rowing Championships, with all the action for Division III now taking place on Friday.
The Division III heats are being moved to earlier in the day, with the Tufts women's second varsity eight's heat set for 7:30 a.m. on Friday and the first varsity eight racing at 7:54 a.m.
There will be no repêchages. The top three boats from each heat advance directly to the grand finals, now set for Friday afternoon instead of Saturday.
The second varsity eight grand final is set for 3:32 p.m. and the first varsity eight grand final will take place at 3:40 p.m.
Weather-permitting, award ceremonies will take place for NCAA Division II and Division III following the conclusion of D1 racing on Friday. The final D1 race is set for 5:32 p.m.
What To Look For
The Jumbos come in to this weekend ranked No. 3 in the nation, but will be looking to earn their third straight NCAA title and third and program history. The Jumbos are coming off a National Invitaitonal Rowing Championships (NIRC) points trophy, and were second in the NESCAC meet on the same day.
Tufts tied Bates College, but the tiebreaker went to Bates due to its finish in the first varsity race. Tufts 2V8+ has consistently been the top second varsity boat in the nation this season, winning both the NIRC and New England Rowing Championships while losing just one race all season.
Tufts top boat had had a more up and down season, but Tufts was 1-1 against Trinity and Coast Guard back on April 4 while knocking off Wesleyan and Wellesley on April 11. The Jumbos though finished fifth at the NERC Regatta on the first varsity, and will look to use their experience to push through for the title.
The win for Tufts would make it the first three-peat since Bates College won four straight from 2017 to 2021. Williams also won eight straight from 2006 to 2013.
