LEWISTON, ME - Junior Jess Capone scored in the 10th minute and the goal stood as the game-winner as Tufts University defeated the Bates College women's soccer team 1-0 in NESCAC action on Saturday at Russell Street Field.
The Jumbos (5-5-2, 4-3-1) won for the first time in four games, evening their overall record and picking up three points in the conference standings. The shutout was Tufts' secord in a row and fifth overall.
Bates sophomore goalkeeper Sarah McCarthy came up big with 11 saves, while Tufts' Emily Bowers did as well with eight. The Jumbos held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks and a 15-12 advantage in shots attempted, including 12-8 in shots on goal.
Capone netted her team-high third goal of the season, unassisted, with 34:24 remaining in the first half of the game. All three of the junior forward's goals this season have been game-winners.
Sarah Grubman took four shots for Tufts, putting three of them on goal. For Bates, both Olivia Amdur and Erin Shea put two shots on goal apiece.
In the competitive NESCAC this fall, Tufts' 13 points has them tied for second place in the league.
Bates (5-5-2, 2-4-0 NESCAC) will host Amherst Sunday at noon. Tufts will host UMass-Boston on Tuesday.
