AMHERST - A first-half goal by junior Jess Capone and a strong defensive effort led by seven saves from freshman goalie Emily Bowers gave the Tufts Women's Soccer team an impressive 1-0 victory at Amherst College on Saturday.

Jess Capone netted her second game-winner of the season

Tufts improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in NESCAC with the victory. The Jumbos have now won two of the last three games in the series against Amherst. The Lord Jeffs (5-2, 2-2 NESCAC) entered the game as the #15 team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll.

Capone scored what proved to be the game's only goal 27 minutes into the action. Corralling the ball near the penalty hash, she fired a shot on net that found its way past the Amherst netminder and into the back right corner of the net. Sophomore Chandler Quintin had the assist.

Amherst freshman Maeve McNamara nearly evened the contest before the half's end. Rifling a shot from the right side of the field, McNamara forced Bowers to make an athletic save, deflecting the ball just over the net.

Despite consistent offensive pressure in the final 10 minutes of play by the home team, Tufts was able to hold on to the victory. It's the Jumbos second straight shutout and third of the season.

Both teams experienced periods of significant momentum in what was a high tempo matchup that saw 24 shots taken between the sides. The Jumbos finished with a 13-11 advantage. Amherst held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-1.

In addition to scoring the Jumbos' lone goal, Capone also led the team in shots on net with three.

Senior Holly Burwick made five saves for Amherst in the first half en route to an eight-save effort. McNamara paced the Purple & White with three shots on goal, while four other Amherst players each put one shot on frame in the outing.

The Jumbos travel to Clinton, N.Y., tomorrow to face NESCAC rival Hamilton College beginning at 11 am. Amherst will return to Hitchcock Field to take on Connecticut College in a NESCAC conference match-up tomorrow at 2 pm.
