Women's Squash Opens NESCAC Championships With Loss to Bowdoin

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The tenth seeded Tufts women's squash team opened up play in the 2015 NESCAC Squash tournament against seventh seeded Bowdoin on Friday afternoon.  The Polar Bears topped the Jumbos, 9-0, to move onto the quarterfinals of tournament play.  

The Jumbos, who move to 5-12 on the season and were ranked 26th in the most recent College Squash Association rankings, began consolation play on Friday night with a 6:30 pm match against 11th seeded and 27th ranked Connecticut College. The 19th ranked Polar Bears will now take on second seeded and 12th ranked Williams on Saturday at 9:30 am in quarterfinal play.

First-year Lauren Banner played the closest match of the day in the fifth position, as her match with Bowdoin's Diya Chopra went to five games.  Banner lost the first two games but won the second two to force the fifth game.  Unfortunately for the Jumbos, Banner wasn't able to win in the fifth game and fell, 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 4-11, 11-1.  

In the second position, senior tri-captain Paige Dahlman played a four game match with Torey Lee but ended up falling to her Bowdoin opponent, 11-8, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8.  Similarly, in the seventh position, sophomore Lynn Cheng also played a four game match with her Bowdoin counterpart, but ended up losing to Emily Simontan, 11-2, 11-8, 5-11, 11-3.  

In the first position, junior tri-captain Paget Stanco fell to Sarah Nelson in three games, 12-10, 11-5, 11-5.  First-year Claudia Udolf took the courts in the third position but was bested by Tully Ross, 11-6, 11-4, 11-6.  Facing off against senior tri-captain Ann Bellinger in the fourth position was Bowdoin's Alden Drake, but the Polar Bear won in three games, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8.  

Sophomore Anna Bezahler took on Chloe Polikoff in the sixth spot, but couldn't top her Bowdoin opponent (11-2, 12-10, 11-3). Rookie Gabi Salomon fell in three games in the eighth position to Bowdoin's Alex Moreno (11-2, 11-2, 11-6).  Rounding out the Jumbos line up was first-year Nellie Harvey, who took on Maggie Bland but was bested in three games, 11-4, 11-2, 11-9.
