CLERMONT, FL - The Tufts softball team broke open a 4-1 game with five runs in the sixth inning to finish off the Keene Owls on Sunday, 9-1.
Tufts nearly took the lead in the first inning when Christina Raso tripled to center field, but Shae Crosby, playing at shortstop, cut her down at the plate on a fielder's choice.
The Jumbos did score once in the second on a bases loaded walk by Carrie Copacino. Tufts added three more in the third inning on a hit by Gracie Marshall, a sacrifice fly from Summer Horowitz and a wild pitch.
Keene State made it a 4-1 game in the top of the sixth inning when Sara Bracken hit a leadoff triple to right field and scored on a wild pitch.
Tufts ended the game with five in the bottom half of the inning off of KSC reliever Lindsey Musco. Raso doubled home a run, senior CF Michelle Cooprider stayed hot with a two-run single and Cassie Ruscz hit an rbi double.
Marshall's three hits led Tufts, while Cooprider was 2 for 4 with two runs and two rbis. Ruscz finished 2 for 4 with two runs and an rbi. Raso had a 2 for 4 day with a run and rbi. Erica County earned the win for Tufts with six innings allowing seven hits and the one run.
For Keene, Emily Bradway started and allowed just two hits in 1.2 innings of work. Mariah Crisp took the loss, giving up three runs in 3.1 innings in the circle. Bracken had two of KSC's seven hits.
Tufts is now 4-0 in its first two days of its spring break trip. Keene played its first two games of the season on Sunday and lost both.
