Box Score CLERMONT, FL - One-hit pitching by senior All-American Allyson Fournier and a five-run explosion in the third inning hoisted the Tufts Jumbos to an 8-0 win in five innings over Western Connecticut on Sunday morning in Florida.
The Jumbos scored in the third on an rbi single by Christina Raso, an rbi single by Michelle Cooprider, an rbi single by Cassie Ruscz, and a two-run single by Maggie Hoffman.
Carrie Copacino went a perfect 3-3 at the dish with two runs for Tufts. She singled in the first, third, and fifth innings. Raso was 2 for 4 wih two runs, Cooprider finished 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run, and Hoffman had two rbis.
Fournier got the win for Tufts while recording 12 strikeouts. The Tufts tri-captain gave up just one hit over five shutout innings.
Nina Wojtkiewicz had the lone hit for the Colonials with a double in the third. They also worked three walks.
Alle Sabith ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. She allowed six runs in four innings, walked two and struck out three.
Tufts piled on two more runs in the top of the fourth to enable an eight-run rule win. A error scored Copacino for the inning's first run.
Tufts improved to 3-0 with the victory. The Jumbos will face Keene State later in the day.
Western Connecticut is now 2-1. The Colonials take on The College of New Jersey later.
