Box Score CLERMONT, FL - Senior Allyson Fournier tossed a one-hit shutout and sophomore 1B Cassie Ruscz went 2 for 4 with three rbis to lift the Tufts softball team to an 8-0 win over Plymouth State in six innings on Monday.
Fournier struck out 13 and walked one. The only hit she allowed was a lead-off single by Kim Leiter in the sixth inning. She's now allowed just two hits and struck out 44 in 18.2 spring-trip innings.
Tufts had nine hits overall, including five extra-base hits. Ruscz singled in the third inning and homered in the fifth. First-year catcher Raven Fournier was 2 for 3 with a run and an rbi, while senior CF Michelle Cooprider and senior 3B Bri Keenan both scored twice.
Jessica Pietersen took the loss for Plymouth State. She allowed six runs in five innings, walked one and struck out one.
Tufts scored in five out of six innings. Back-to-back doubles by Raven Fournier and sophomore Shelby Lipson made it 1-0 in the second. Ruscz's third-inning single scored Cooprider, who had doubled and it was 2-0.
After Tufts went up 4-0 with the help of a Plymouth error in the fourth, Ruscz's two-run homer made it 6-0 in the fifth. They capped their scoring with two in the sixth. Junior 2B Abby Curran singled home a run and the game ended on a bases-loaded hit by pitch to Raven Fournier.
Now 5-0, the Jumbos will play Lesley College later in the day. The Panthers (0-3) will face Bowdoin later on Monday.
