Box Score CLERMONT, FL - Senior CF Michelle Cooprider continued her outstanding start to 2015 by hitting a two-run single in the top of the first to spark the Jumbo softball team to a 6-2 win against Anderson (IN) on Tuesday.
Tufts, ranked #1 in the NFCA poll, built a 6-0 lead against the #22 Ravens, who would score the first runs of the season against Tufts senior Allyson Fournier. Anderson tallied twice in the bottom of the sixth.
Tufts sophomore LF Carrie Copacino walked to set the table in the first. Senior 3B Bri Keenan followed with a single and junior SS Christina Raso bunted both over a base. Cooprider's single scored both.
Fournier, who would strike out 16 in the game, started by striking out the side in the Anderson first. Down 2-0, the Ravens would threaten in the bottom of the second. Singles by Blake Thomas and Sorcha Cox put two runners on, but Fournier got a K to end it.
Tufts would expand its lead to 5-0 in the third. Sophomore RF Shelby Lipson, junior 2B Abby Curran and Copacino all had run-scoring singles.
Fournier cruised through the third, fourth and fifth with Tufts leading 5-0. They added a run in the sixth when Raso doubled home sophomore Maggie Hoffman, who had walked.
Both runs against Fournier in the sixth would be unearned. Shelby Shaffer and Morgan Burke both singled with one out to get Anderson started. An infield error scored Shaffer and then a rbi single by Samantha Ausmus brought Burke home.
Tufts was playing without regulars Gracie Marshall and Cassie Ruscz due to illness. In addition to Cooprider, Lipson went 2 for 4 with a run and a rbi. Fournier allowed five hits and the two unearned runs with no walks in seven innings.
