Box Score CLERMONT, FL - A six-spot in the third inning pushed the Tufts softball team to a 7-2 victory over Wellesley College in the Jumbos' final game of their spring break trip on Saturday. Tufts, the #1 team in the country, completed the week with a perfect 14-0 record.
The Jumbos scored the six runs in the third on five hits and two Wellesley errors. Sophomore LF Carrie Copacino led off with a single. After senior 3B Bri Keenan walked, senior 2B Gracie Marshall drove home the game's first run with a single through the left side. Senior CF Michelle Cooprider followed with a one-out double making it 2-0.
Tufts would get the next four runs on a sacrifice bunt by first-year Michelle Chisdak, a single by junior SS Christina Raso and two Wellesley errors.
Senior pitcher Allyson Fournier started for the Jumbos and went four innings allowing just one hit and no runs with six strikeouts.
Wellesley got on the scoreboard with a run against Tufts reliever Raina Galbiati in the fifth. Julia Warner singled with one out, stole second and scored on a single through the left side by Mariah Phillips making it 6-1.
Cooprider singled to lef-center to start the Tufts seventh. She advanced to third on a fielder's choice and a fly out and then scored on a sac fly by Marly Becker giving the Jumbos a 7-1 advantage.
The Blue added a single run in the seventh against Cooprider. Kendra Coleman singled and took third on an error. She scored on Phillips' sac fly.
Tufts had nine hits, with Cooprider finishing 2 for 4 with two runs and an rbi. Marshall was 2 for 4 with a run and an rbi.
Fournier finished the trip with an 8-0 record and 0.15 earned run average. She allowed just one earned run and struck out 101 batters in 47 innings. She returns home just six strikeouts shy of 1,000 for her career.
Wellesley's Warner went the distance for the loss, pitching seven innings and giving up nine hits and three earned runs. She struck out two and walked two.
