WATERVILLE, Maine – The Tufts men's tennis team took a 2-1 lead in doubles play and won five of six matches to take a 7-2 NESCAC tennis win over Colby on Friday afternoon.
The win was the first conference win of the season for the Jumbos and snapped a five match losing streak.
At No. 2 doubles junior Nick Cary and sophomore Benjamin Battle picked up a win over the Colby pair of Jeremy Mendoza and Mark HoSang. The Jumbos picked up another win at No. 3 doubles as rookies Zain Ali and Griffin Brockman topped Shaw Speer and Cameron Hillier.
The lone win in doubles play for the Mules came at No. 1 doubles as Vlad Murad and Carl Reid topped the Jumbo pair of junior Nik Telkedzhiev and freshman Rohan Gupte.
The Jumbos then secured the win with five of six wins in singles play. At No. 2 Gupte dropped the first set before coming back to win over Murad, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 3 singles Ali picked up a two set win over Hillier. At No. 4 singles, Battle won in two sets over Mendoza.
The last two wins in singles play came at No. 5 and No. 6 singles as junior co-captain Rob Jacobson and classmate Jay Glickman both picked up two set wins for the Jumbos.
At No. 1 singles, Telkedzhiev fell in two sets to Colby's Reid.
The match with Colby started a busy weekend for the Jumbos, as they will be back in action on Saturday with a 2:30 pm match with Connecticut College at home. They then host Washington and Lee and Williams on Sunday.
