HARTFORD, CT - The Tufts University softball team won both ends of a double-header at Trinity College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division action on Saturday afternoon at Campus Field. The Jumbos took the opening game, 9-1, in five innings and won the finale, 14-0, in five innings.
Tufts, ranked #1 in the nation, remained undefeated with the victories and improved to 25-0 on the year and 7-0 in conference tilts. With the losses, the Bantams move to 6-19 overall and 2-7 in league play.
The Jumbos will play two NESCAC East games tomorrow at Bowdoin College. They will face Bates at 10 am and then the host Polar Bears at noon. If Tufts is able to win both games, they will win the East pennant and clinch hosting rights for the NESCAC Championship May 1-3.
In game one today, Tufts junior pitcher Erica County went four innings and allowed one run on four hits for the Jumbos to earn her 11th win of the spring. In the circle for Trinity, junior Hannah King was saddled with the loss as she worked 3.2 innings and allowed nine runs (six earned) to go along with six strikeouts.
At the plate, Jumbos first-year catcher Raven Fournier went 2 for 3 with two home runs and five rbis to lead Tufts' attack. Senior outfielder Michelle Cooprider also had a multi-hit game for the Jumbos, as she went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and three rbis.
For the Bantams, senior Miranda Riendeau-Card had an rbi single and junior outfielder Erica Quinones went 1 for 2 with a run scored. Trinity first-year catcher Paola Otero extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a liner to right field in the bottom of the first.
In the second game, Tufts plated runs in the top of the first. The Jumbos chased Trinity starter Rachael Smith and reliever Lexi Santurri after each recorded only one out. King pitched well in relief for the Bantams as she tossed the final 4.1 innings and struck out four batters.
Senior pitcher Allyson Fournier was dominant in the circle for the Jumbos, as she went the distance and struck out 11 batters while surrendering just one hit. With two outs in bottom of the fourth, Riendeau-Card broke up Fournier's perfect game with a line drive single up the middle.
Raven Fournier had another strong game at the dish, going 2 for 3 with a home run, three rbis and two runs scored. Senior infielder Gracie Marshall also had three rbis as she knocked three hits and scored three runs.
