MEDFORD - Capping a stellar three-day run in the best way imaginable, the Tufts men's tennis team ended a 25-year losing streak to Williams College with a 6-3 win over the Ephs in a NESCAC match at Voute Courts on Sunday afternoon.
After sweeping doubles, the Jumbos were able to secure three singles wins and earn their first win against the Ephs since 1989. The victory was the fourth in a row since Friday for Tufts, including topping Colby, Connecticut College and Washington & Lee previously. The #30 Jumbos moved over .500 overall with the Williams win at 7-6 and are now 3-3 in the league. Williams, ranked 14th nationally, dropped to 8-8 and 2-3 NESCAC.
Winners earlier in the day against Washington and Lee, the Jumbos' top two doubles pairs brought it again versus the Ephs. Nik Telkedzhiev and Rohan Gupte won 8-5 in the #1 match and Nick Cary with Benjamin Battle were 8-4 winners on the second court. The freshman tandem of Zain Ali and Griffin Brockman won for Tufts at #3 8-5.
The singles victories which wrapped up the win were recorded by Gupte, Rob Jacobson and Jay Glickman. Gupte was impressive in the second match, defeating Rohan Shastri 6-4 and 6-3. Glickman gave up just six games in his #6 singles victory while Jacobson - showing Tufts' depth playing at #5 - won 6-4 and 7-5.
All six singles matches were decided in two sets. At the top Williams' Jose Raventos defeated Telkedzhiev 7-5 and 6-3. Alexander Schidlovsky bested Ali 6-4, 6-2 on the third singles court. At #4, Williams' Brian Grodecki had a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Battle.
The Jumbos continue their four-match homestand with another NESCAC test against #20 Bates College on Wednesday at 4 pm. Williams is also at home on Wednesday at 4 in a NESCAC match against Trinity.
