MEDFORD – Senior Allyson Fournier pitched a one-hit shutout as the Tufts Softball team advanced to the finals of the 2015 NESCAC Championship with a 5-0 victory over Williams College on Saturday afternoon at Spicer Field.
Tufts (40-0) will play for its fourth straight conference title and 10th overall on Sunday in game six of the conference tournament at 10 am. They will face either Williams (29-6) or Middlebury, who meet in an elimination game five on Saturday at 3 pm. The winner advances to face the Jumbos on Sunday and must defeat them twice.
Fournier improved to 24-0 this spring, striking out 15 with one walk along the way. She lost a no-hitter when Williams senior CF Mo Frank singled with two outs in the sixth.
The Jumbos scored all the runs they would need in the first inning. Sophomore LF Carrie Copacino led off with a single and senior CF Michelle Cooprider had a one-out base hit. After a walk, both scored on a single through the left side by first-year catcher Raven Fournier.
The Jumbos added an unearned run in the fourth after sophomore DP Shelby Lipson led off with a single and took second on a throwing error. She scored on a single to center by junior SS Christina Raso giving Tufts a 3-0 lead.
Tufts added another unearned run in the sixth after senior 3B Bri Keenan led off with a walk. She stole second and then scored on a throwing error while she was stealing third. Williams committed four errors in the game.
With Tufts up 4-0, Williams relieved senior starter Emma Harrington with senior Emalie Rott. The Jumbos proceeded to score their fifth run with a Raso single, a Wiliams error, a wild pitch and a ground out by sophomore 1B Cassie Ruscz.
Raso continued her strong tournament going 3 for 4 with a run and an rbi. Cooprider was 2 for 4 with run as the Jumbos finished with nine hits.
Harrington took the loss, allowing eight hits and four runs (two earned) with two strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Rott finished up with an inning giving up a hit and a run.
