Box Score SOMERVILLE - Nicole Campellone scored twice and Alex Scheman added one as Tufts beat Colby 3-1 in each team's first NESCAC match on Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field.
The first half saw Tufts come out firing. The Jumbos had great opportunities – a Brooke Fortin corner and Alex Aronson shot from just outside the eighteen – but could not find the back of the net. In the 25th minute, Campellone changed that as she tallied her first header off of an Emma Ranalli corner. Colby could not even the score, despite an open look in the box by Laura Arnold to start the game, and a would-be goal in the 40th, were it not for the diving save of Tufts' keeper Emily Bowers.
Both teams upped the energy in the second. Colby started the half with two corners, but could not convert. Then partway into the half, Scheman finished the eventual game-winner and her first career goal, as she chipped the ball over Colby goalie Sam Rizzo. Less than two minutes later, Colby responded with a goal of their own. A foul on Tufts resulted in a free kick for the Mules, right on the outskirts of the box. Ally Ingraham powered her shot off of the Jumbo wall, and the rebound landed directly on the right foot of Katherine Gillespie, who placed her shot in the upper left corner.
Tufts added some insurance with the final goal of the game in the 87th minute. Campellone found an arcing Fortin cross from the right side, again heading it home.
Both keepers were impressive, coming up with big-time saves. Bowers ended the game with 4 saves, and Rizzo with 11. The Jumbos outshot the Mules 28-14.
Tufts (1-1, 1-0 NESCAC) enters their first road match and continues NESCAC play on Tuesday at Wesleyan at 4:30pm. Colby (0-1, 0-1 NESCAC) takes on Thomas on Tuesday at 7pm.
