Volleyball Falls to No. 3 Christopher Newport at Beacon Invitational

Box Score
Katie Kim had five kills for the Jumbos on Saturday morning against CNU.

BOSTON  – The Tufts volleyball team had its work cut out for them on Saturday morning, taking on No. 3 nationally ranked Christopher Newport at the Beacon Invitational hosted by UMass-Boston.  The Jumbos were hoping to carry the momentum from downing No. 12 Eastern, 3-1, on Friday night into Saturday's match, but they had no such luck.  The Jumbos fell to Christopher Newport, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-22), but put up a fight in all three sets.

Maddie Kuppe was the offensive leader for the Jumbos once again, finishing with seven kills, nine digs, four aces and a block assist.  Sophomore Katie Kim finished with five kills, while senior co-captain Carolina Berger turned in eight digs.  Senior Kyra Baum and first-year Angela Yu split the setting, with Baum tallying 13 assists and Yu finishing with 11.  Junior Elizabeth Ahrens added two solo blocks and one block assist.

The Jumbos scored the first point of the first set, but Christopher Newport then scored four consecutive points to take the lead and had it for the rest of the first set, securing the 25-19 win.

Christopher Newport took an early lead in the second set, but five consecutive points for the Jumbos behind the serve of Maddie Kuppe helped Tufts take a 7-5 lead.  The Captains came back and took the lead again, and held it for much of the rest of the match.  The Jumbos scored four straight points late behind Kuppe's serve to come within one, 20-21, but the Captains got a kill and an ace from Rachel Conway, along with some Jumbo errors, to move to a 25-21 win in set two.

In set three the Jumbos found themselves down early, but were not going to give up.  Down 21-14, the Jumbos found their rhythm behind Kuppe's serve again and scored six straight points to make the score 21-22 before the Captains recorded a point of their own.  The Jumbos got a kill from Kim to make it 22-23 in the Captains favor, but a kill from Hannah Miller and Maddie McCann gave Christopher Newport the 25-22 win in set three.

The Jumbos had a small break and then took on St. Benedict at 3 pm to wrap up play in the Beacon Invitational.  Christopher Newport also played another match on Saturday, topping No. 12 Eastern, 3-1.
