Box Score BRISTOL, RI - Senior Maddie Kuppe recorded 13 kills with just three errors on 37 attempts (.270) leading the Tufts Vollyeball team to a three-set victory at Roger Williams University on Wedneday night. Set scores were 25-23, 25-18 and 27-25.
The Jumbos, ranked fourth in the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) poll released earlier in the day, improved to 3-2. Tufts opens its NESCAC season on Friday night at #1 in New England Williams College.
Roger Williams, led by Elizabeth Flaherty's 12 kills, dropped to 4-6. The Hawks, NEWVA's #10 team, host Curry College next on Thursday.
Tufts had a strong hitting night overall, finishing with a .259 percentage. First-year McKenzie Humann had five kills with one error in nine attempts (.444) and MacKenzie Bright recorded five kills with just one error in 13 attempts (.308). First-year Angela Yu led Tufts with 20 assits.
Defensively, Yu's 13 paced led the Jumbos. Humann recored two solo blocks with three assists while junior Elizabeth Ahrens had two solos and two assists.
The host Hawks started off with a four-point lead in the first set on a service run by sophomore Maria Bates. The Jumbos would go on three-point run to tie the set, which then went point for point until Anique Barch would get a kill for the Jumbos to take the lead. With a service error from Jumbos, the Hawks would tie the game before Tufts won the set 25-23.
The Jumbos used an early six-point run to lead the second set 7-1. Tufts would keep the lead the whole second set. The third set was another close one. RWU freshman Jill McManamann got a block to tie the game 24-24 until outside hitter Alex Garrett would get a kill to make it match point leading to the Jumbo victory.
Josalyn Benson had 23 assists and a .444 hitting percentage for the hosts. Kristen Boyer had nine kills on the night.
