Box Score SOMERVILLE - Trinity junior Laura Nee scored twice in the second half to lead the Bantams to a 3-1 win over the Jumbos on Sunday afternoon at Kraft Field.
Tufts came out strong in the first half, controlling the game. They had 3 early opportunities to score – a cross from Stefanie Brunswick to a shot by Alex Aronson soared just wide of the goal, and shots from Jess Capone and Brooke Fortin were denied by the crossbar and Bantam keeper Monica DiFiori. In the 13th minute, a Tufts handball in the box resulted in a Trinity penalty kick, and Kendra Lena tallied the first goal of the match.
The Jumbos did not lose momentum, and had chances to score off of 4 Emma Ranalli corners throughout the half. With less than 5 minutes remaining in the first, Alexa Pius lofted a ball over the Bantam defense to find an open Allie Weiller. Weiller ran onto the ball and dribbled around DiFiori to record her first goal of the season.
Trinity did not waste any time before Nee scored the game-winner just 3 minutes into the second half. Taylor Kirchgessner found herself open on the end line, and threaded a cross through the Jumbo defense to a wide-open Nee. With fifteen minutes to go in the game, Nee sealed the deal for the Bantams, as she placed a shot from the eighteen into the upper right corner of the goal.
Despite outshooting the Bantams 25-10 in the game, and 8-5 in the second half, the Jumbos would not score for the remainder of the match. Ranalli was alone at the top of the eighteen partway through the second, but her shot landed wide left. And DiFiori gobbled up a Fortin cross with eleven minutes to go.
Emily Bowers recorded 3 saves for Tufts, and DiFiori 7 for Trinity. The Jumbos (2-3, 2-2 NESCAC) will look to bounce back next week with a non-conference match at Brandeis on Saturday at 1pm. Trinity (3-1, 2-1 NESCAC) takes on Albertus Magnus at home on September 24th at 4:30pm.
