PUTNEY, VT - Seventeen members of the Tufts Varsity Women's Rowing team raced alongside current and former National Team and Olympic Scullers this morning at the Green Mountain Head in bucolic Putney, Vt., on the Connecticut River.
On a gorgeous day, under a cloudless sky, long-legged tights were the early morning rule as temperatures dipped into the low 30's overnight.
Seven members of the Tufts Women's team were in competition in the Women's Single event for 19-34 year olds in much more serious company than they will see the rest of the year at the college level. The field of 26 scullers included nine collegians who got the opportunity to rub shoulders, and in many cases get passed by their more experienced opponents.
The foray into the open sculling world is part of Tufts' commitment to sculling as a central component of the rowing program, with roughly 35 oarswomen sculling every day through the eight-week fall season.
Tufts Singles Results:
Claire Sleigh '16 (four seat in the 2015 NCAA Eight) and Emma Wells '16 (seven Seat in the highly successful 2015 2nd Varsity Eight), reached the podium in the Open Women's Doubles event with an overall third place finish in the field of 15 boats. A total of 10 Jumbos formed five double sculls and raced in the event, against another star-dominated field. The only college crews in the event finished in this order:
Tufts Doubles Results:
Later in the program Varsity Women's co-captain Rachel Siegler '16 teamed up with Men's returning Senior Varsity Eight oarsman Andrew Warren '16 in the Mixed Double event. They finished just off the podium in fourth place with a time of 22:03.6.
The Jumbos are next in action at the Seven Sisters Sculling Regatta with UMass, Ithaca, and Smith on Sunday, October 11 in South Hadley, Mass., on the Connecticut River.
