Scott Greenwood tied Tufts' career shutouts record with his 22nd at Wesleyan |
Greenwood made eight saves to earn his fourth shutout of 2015 and 22nd of his career, tying the Tufts all-time mark. Mike Gamsby accumulated 22 from 1993-96. Katkavich made six saves for Wesleyan to post his second shutout of the year and extend his streak of consecutive shutout minutes to 270:45.
With most of the play in the midfield, the two teams played a scoreless first half. Each team managed just three shots. There weren't many quality scoring chances in the half, but Tufts did have a goal waived off with 18:10 to go when the play was called offside and Wesleyan senior Brandon Sousa rang a shot off the crossbar early in the period. Wesleyan had the only two corner kicks of the half, but neither resulted in a shot.
The Jumbos nearly took the lead just three minutes into the second half as a blast from Matt Zinner seemed ticketed for the top left corner of the net, but Katkavich made a dive to tip it wide.
Just two minutes later, Wesleyan sophomore Adam Cowie-Haskell fired a shot from the top of the box that hit the crossbar squarely.
With 30 minutes remaining, Nathan Majumder had a breakaway chance for the Jumbos, but Katkavich made a diving save to his left to preserve the tie. Majumder had another chance with 18:20 left with Katkavich out of the net, but the junior hit the post.
At the end of regulation the Cardinals had outshot Tufts, 7-6.
Midway through the overtime, Cowie-Haskell had another chance with an open net and missed the shot wide right. The Jumbos had one last gasp in the final ten seconds, but a shot from the top of the box by Zach Halliday went wide.
The teams played just one overtime due to darkness. The Cardinals outshot Tufts 14-11 overall.
Ahead for Wesleyan is a visit to NESCAC rival Hamilton on Saturday. Tufts takes on fourth-ranked Amherst in a road NESCAC contest Saturday as well.
