CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Tufts freshman duo of Alex Aronson and Sarah Grubman scored as the Tufts Women's Soccer team blanked MIT 2-0 in a non-conference matchup at Steinbrenner Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Aronson found the back of the net for the second time this season in the fourth minute putting the visitors on the board early in this one. Sophomore Chandler Quintin sent a rocket off of the cross bar - back into play - where the ball found the foot of Aronson, who booted it into the lower right corner of the net, giving the Jumbos a 1-0 advantage.
MIT sophomore Olivia Struckman had two great scoring opportunities at the end of the first half, which would have knotted the game heading into the break. With 4:55 remaining on the clock, classmate Christina Dalzell crossed to Struckman who was on the doorstep, but the ball trickled just out of the outstretched foot of the forward.
Struckman had one more chance, a breakaway opportunity a few minutes later, but Tufts freshman goalkeeper Emily Bowers met her out at the top of the box deflecting the ball out of play. Tufts nearly got its second goal with 1:29 left to play in the half on a shot by senior Allie Weiller, but MIT junior goalkeeper Lauren Ullmann leapt and punched the ball away from the net, keeping the score 1-0 in favor of Tufts, heading into the break.
In the second half, MIT had a couple more scoring chances, but the offense couldn't get through the Tufts backline. Struckman had a breakaway attempt, much as she did at the end of the first half, 2:52 into the second stanza. Struckman gathered and fired from the 25 yard line, but the ball sailed just to the left on the net.
Tufts scored its second goal at the 62:26 marker of the game when junior Brooke Fortin crossed the ball from deep in her zone, practically at the end line. Fortin sent a cross to Grubman, who was waiting inside the eight yard box when her foot connected with the ball sending just out of the reach of Ullmann.
The Cardinal and Gray struggled offensively, only registering three shots – one on goal, to Tufts' 14 on the afternoon, as the Jumbos' defense played strong in front of Bowers for a complete 90 minutes. Bowers picked up the win and made one save between the pipes, improving her record to 3-4 this season. Ullmann stopped six shots, but her record fell to 4-4-1 this year.
MIT (4-4-1) travels to Bowdoin College for its second consecutive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) contest on Thursday at 4:00 pm, while Tufts (3-4-0) heads to No. 15 Amherst College on Saturday with kickoff slated for 12:00 pm.
