Men's Soccer Defeats Trinity, 2-0, Sunday for Third Straight NESCAC Victory

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Tufts University men's soccer team recorded its third consecutive shutout Saturday in Hartford, Connecticut, as the Jumbos defeated host Trinity, 2-0, in NESCAC action. 

Gavin Tasker posted his second assist of the season Sunday.

The Jumbos (7-3-2, 5-1-2 in NESCAC) extended their unbeaten streak to five games, while they are undefeated in eight of their last nine contests. The squad currently sits in second place in the NESCAC standings with 17 points, which is only two points behind first-place Amherst. 

Senior forward Gaston Becherano recorded both goals in the victory, as he now has three multi-goal games on the season. The Hollywood, Florida, native has a team-high nine goals this season, while also leading the team with five game-winners. 

Senior goalkeeper Scott Greenwood (6-2-1) posted five saves in the victory, as he has posted shutouts in each of his last four starts. The Weymouth, Massachusetts, native has six shutouts on the season and a program-leading 33 career shutouts. Senior goalkeeper Domenic Quade recorded a game-high nine saves for the Bantams (6-5-2, 3-5-1 in NESCAC). 

Junior midfielder Kevin Halliday fired a shot on goal in the fourth minute, but Quade denied the attempt. The Bantams responded by trying to score the first goal of the game when senior forward/midfielder Andrew Bruno fired a shot on target in the 23rd minute, but Greenwood was up to the challenge.

Tasker fired two consecutive shots on goal toward the end of the first half, but both drives were turned away by Quade. Senior captain and forward Nathan Majumder tried to give the Jumbos a two-goal cushion during the 40th minute, but Quade stood tall and turned away the shot. Freshman forward Henry Farr wanted to tie the score heading into intermission, but Greenwood saved his shot during the 43rd minute. 

Greenwood was called upon 50 seconds into the second half, as he made a solid save on a shot by senior midfielder Tobias Gimand. Freshman midfielder/back Zachary Trevorrow responded with a shot 14 seconds later, but the attempt was turned aside by Quade. 

The Jumbos peppered Quade in the 64th minute, as junior midfielder Dexter Eichhorst and Tasker fired shots, but both were saved by Quade. The Jumbos netted the insurance goal in the 74th minute, as Becherano found the back of the net assisted by Trevorrow. 

The Jumbos outshot the Bantams, 16-10, including holding an 11-5 advantage in the shots-on-goal category. The Jumbos attempted two corner kicks in the game, while being guilty of six fouls and two yellow-card bookings. The Bantams were whistled for five infractions and were the recipients of one yellow card.

Tasker posted five shots, with four being on goal for the Jumbos, and Gimand posted five shots, with two being on goal for the Bantams. 

The Jumbos have three regular-season games remaining, as they will host Keene State at Bello Field on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The squad will then host Williams Saturday at 2 p.m., and then it will travel to Brunswick, Maine, for its regular-season finale against Bowdoin on Tuesday (Oct. 25) at 2:30 p.m.
