Senior Jess Capone recorded her fifth goal of the season |
Senior Jess Capone scored the only goal in the 73rd minute of the match against Bowdoin at Pickard Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Jumbos moved into a tie for fifth place with two teams, Connecticut College and Bowdoin, with the same NESCAC record of 5-4-1. Tufts won both matchups so they move above them in the NESCAC standings for the better seeding. The Polar Bears end their regular season at an overall record of 9-5-1 while Tufts goes 7-5-3.
Neither team could score in the opening half, but both produced potential drives. Robin Estus fed Mariah Harvey-Brown in the box 14 minutes into the game for Tufts, but Harvey-Brown's shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
With the closest attempt in the game, Bowdoin's Morgen Gallagher ran from midfield to battle for a ball with a Tufts defender. Gallagher kept with the ball and spun to shoot it, but it went right into Tufts sophomore goalkeeper Emily Bowers for the save in the 26th minute of play.
Tufts freshman Jenna Troccoli was active in the center of the field today including producing a shot off a one-on-one from the left side of the box shot that flew just right of the goal in the 27th minute.
With three minutes to go until halftime, Capone battled to the right side of the goal and rifled a shot off the goalkeeper's fingers as Bowdoin goalie Rachel Stout prevented the ball from going past her.
From a pass at midfield by Troccoli, Capone struck a shot into the right side of the net for the 1-0 lead and the eventual game-winning goal for the Jumbos in the 73rd minute of the match.
The conditions were very difficult to play in with heavy winds and low temperatures. The wind was mostly going sideways of the field, so the goalies and corner kickers had trouble putting the ball up in the air.
Bowers ended the day with a pair of saves for Tufts, while Stout made six stops for the Polar Bears. The Jumbos held a 13-9 edge in shots and Bowdoin edged the visitors 5-2 in corner kicks.
The NESCAC Championship is next for the Jumbos in which they have received the fifth seed in the tournament and will play at fourth-seed Trinity on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals. The Polar Bears get the seventh seed and play at second seed Middlebury on Saturday.
