Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. - Whitworth junior pitcher Madi Perez tossed a six-hit shutout leading the Pirates to a 6-0 win over Tufts in spring trip softball action Saturday. The game was the season-opener for the Jumbos.
The loss ends Tufts' 53-game winning streak which dated back to 2014 and is the longest in NCAA Division III history.
Perez struck out five and did not walk a batter. Freshman DP Morgan Portlock went 2 for 4 with a two rbis and a run to lead the Pirates offensively. Myranda Ramirez was 3 for 4, while Alyssa Hall and Shannon Wessel also had two hits as Whitworth finished with 14. This was the 15th game of the season for the Pirates (12-3).
Senior SS Christina Raso, sophomore C Raven Fournier, and junior RF Maggie Hoffman had two hits each for the Jumbos.
Whitworth scored all six of their runs on eight hits and a Tufts error in the second inning. Portlock led off with a double and scored on another double by Tessa Matthews. Michelle Silva followed with an rbi single and Wessell tripled her home making it 3-0. After the first out was made, Desi Graham scored Silva with a bunt single. The Pirates batted around and Portlock came through with a two-run single later in the inning.
Fournier doubled for Tufts with one out in the second and moved to third with two outs, but did not score. She also singled to lead off the fifth and Hoffman followed with a base hit. Sophomore 3B Sara Willner-Giwerc sacrificed both over a base, but the Jumbos couldn't capitalize.
Senior Erica County took the loss in the pitcher's circle for Tufts. She went seven innings allowing six hits and six runs with four strikeouts.
The Jumbos' second game of the day against Concordia (Mich.) was stopped due to rain.
